The first thing I did today as soon as I woke up (which ofcourse is my daily chores)- Checked the headlines from Nepal. And the news holding the title "Int’l job fair takes violent turn; Kantipur Publications too attacked" caught my attention right away. While reading the headline I thought it was probably just another frustrated people taking it to the streets for no valid reasons. But when I read the news mannn I felt sorry for the youths who attended that fair.
Well, the entrance fee was Rs 100 per head. And they also had to pay Rs 50,000 as the training fees inorder to 'get' the job in the first place. There were other requirements too but the '50,000' was the weiredest one of all. A total bullshit. I can understand, how hard it is in a country like ours to earn even Rs 100 a day and they were asking for 100 +. Perhaps for the first time I thought the agitation taken out to the organizers in our already chaotic world was absolutely valid and made sense. Its not fair to take advantage of frustrated people that way saying something and doing something else. And during the process Kantipur Publication building too was vandalized as they were the official media partner.
Well eventually one of the organizers decided to reimburse the ticket fee.
And here's the funny part. The Minister for Labour and Transport Management Ramesh Lekhak had inaugurated the fair promising some 1000 job offers mostly in India and abroad. WHat a total fiasco waht an ass that guy was....this shows people up above they don't do their homeworks they only know how to exploit people.
ANd heres the even more funnier than the funniest moment eof all even the main organizer (the same one who decided to refund the ticket fee)-
' Manager of the New Horizons, Dipak Pun told Kantipur FM Saturday afternoon: “We will refund the ticket fees as the fair has been cancelled.”'

He said- he himself was not aware about the money collected in the fair for whatever reasons.hhahaha....this got to be a piece worth incorporating in shows like 'late night show with......'
what hte fk was that...that man was one of the main organizers...and what the hell was that all about..like he 'didn't know' ......what a crap...for being an organizer it was his responsibility to look after all this...a total shit.....

I came across this rant while looking for coverage of the incident. It's quite wierd that the entire issue barely got covered with only the Hindu in India carrying a PTI article. I heard a first hand account of what happened, and immediately thought - now how did that happen?

Then I got the link for the fair's website, http://jobs.nhnepal.com/ and went through the list of companies to find out what could have led to such a fiasco. There were 2-3 training/recruitment companies in there. I've always eyed such companies with suspicion, but then they do what they do, train you (at your own cost, of course) and then give you an opportunity to get yourself employed, or employ you themselves. I have heard of success stories from people I know, which is why I fall short at calling them scams.

My prime suspect is the aviation training institute, which does appear to provide industry certification. INR 50,000 for training seems like quite a paltry sum, but in the context of nepal, it would seem a lot.

Understanding what job fairs are about, it seems quite likely that said Bal Dibas Pandit hit the wrong stall, looking for a 'job', but when given a kind hint by the recruiter of the costs involved in attaining such employment, overreacted.

All in all, I'd say it was a square loss, both for the ITES companies which were present there as well as for a good 15-20% of the turnout which could have gone home with job & relocation offers. And all that fuss due to the ignorance of a few disgruntled well-educated underachievers. They have no idea of the kind of harm they've done.

The people who came back were in shock. The stress of the entire episode slowly seeped in, as they recalled industry peers crying at the possibility of being mobbed, their evacuation by International security forces from the venue and the uncertainty of their fates in between.

The Forum Achyut Aryal may as well go all out for self-immolation now, seeing that they've only heightened the unemployment problem which their government had tried so caringly to resolve.

I'd heard some of the returnees saying that returning to India, they felt that India was developed, after all the years that they'd felt otherwise. I had to argue that it's not very different in India, the tendency to overreact and mob rule, it's just that we should have hired Bal Dibas Pandit of Balaju (Mass.Comm. expert) to do our branding for us. He undid in 15 minutes for free what all the companies present combined had paid in lacs for to do.
